Old Town puts more famous sights on relatively level ground; Malá Strana offers Kampa, gardens, and castle atmosphere with more hills. Both have cobbles, narrow historic buildings, and heavy visitor traffic. The deciding factor is usually the exact accommodation entrance and room, not which side of Charles Bridge looks prettier in photographs.
Old Town advantages and costs
Old Town Square, the river, and many central sights are reachable without a vehicle. This supports nap walks and quick returns. Crowds around the clock and Charles Bridge can make steering slow, while late-night voices, deliveries, and early cleaning affect sleep. Restaurants and hotels in old buildings may have steps or very small lifts.
Malá Strana advantages and costs
Kampa provides welcome green and riverside space, and quieter lanes exist away from the bridge approach. Trams can remove part of the climb toward the castle. However, gradients increase quickly, stone can be slippery, and some picturesque accommodation sits behind stairs. Map elevation from the nearest accessible stop before booking.
Crossing between them
Charles Bridge is stroller-passable but busiest during the middle of the day. Other bridges may create a smoother or less crowded loop, depending on the route. Tram tracks cross central approaches, so keep wheels at a clear angle. Do not treat the river as a barrier: a well-chosen tram can make staying on either bank practical.
Ask the same five questions
- Are there steps before or after the lift?
- What are the lift and room-door dimensions?
- Which direction does the room face?
- Where can an open or folded stroller be stored?
- What is the step-free route from a low-floor stop?
Also confirm cot space and nighttime cooling, especially in summer.
